Most of the letters concern etchings done both for publication and for private commissions, and to the pen and ink portraits he executed for Appleton's Cyclopedia of American Biography and Scribner's Cyclopedia of Painters and Painting. Among Reich's correspondents are found: Grover Cleveland, Frederick Dent Grant, Daniel Huntington, Robert Todd Lincoln, and James Russell Lowell

Drawing of Lieut. Gen. Stephen D. Lee, drawn from a photograph by Jacques Reich (1852-1923) in 1892. Lee resigned his U.S. Army commission in 1861 to join the Confederate forces. As aide-de-camp to Gen. Beauregard, Lee delivered the ultimatum to evacuate Fort Sumter to Major Anderson; Lee rejoined S.C. Militia, serving in Army of Tennessee and being youngest officer to be commissioned a lieutenant general in 1864. Jacques Reich emigrated from Hungary in 1873, lived in New York state, and gained national fame as a portrait etcher
