The Whip: Bowie Breaks up the trafficking of prision labor for private profit when he learns that a plantation owner is selling cotton below market value, his crop harvested by such labor. The prisoners' wages are going to a dishonest prison guard, an expert with a bull whip. Pearls of Talimeco: Bowie conspires with a friendly Indian to send a skin-flint neighbor on a wild goose chase after buried pearls, but the plan backfires. The Charivari: Bowie is shocked when an elderly bridegroom is fatally wounded during a post-wedding shivaree. During a police investigation, bowie points suspicion at the dead man's daughter who had asked him to prevent her father's marriage. The hare and tortise: Bowie learns about a plot by landowners to improve their property by moving the capital of Louisiana to a little town up the river. The Bridegroom:Bowie flees from a gang of waterfront ruffians and takes refuge in a French quarter home where he promptly becomes a prime candidate for a groom. The alligator: Bowie purchases a doll to give to a young girl on her birthday, but in it discovers a strange clue to a diabolical murder plot. Country girl: Bowie invests money on behalf of himself and a neighbor, a girl from his hometown. But then learns that he has actually presented it to swindlers. They recover their money when the swindlers disagree among themselves. Mexican adventure: Pirate Jean Lafitte is persuaded by Bowie to help rescue Joel Poinsett, the first American ambassador to Mexico. Bowie and his party are forced to take refuge at an inn as Christmas is celebrated and a baby is born in a manger
