Visual Compensatory Tracking Performance after Exposure to Flashblinding Pulses. II. Sub-Damage-Threshold Laser Irradiation of Rhesus Monkey Subjects ( Book )
1 edition published in 1981 in English and held by 1 library worldwide
Two rhesus monkeys were exposed to green or multicolor (white) laser pulses while performing a visual compensator tracking test. The pulses were approximately 200 nsec in duration; energy deposited on the retina ranged from 0.55 to 3.75 micro J.A total of 99 exposures were recorded. Flashblindness recovery times (FBT's) were determined by examination of postexposure tracking error plots. Most exposures had no apparent effect. Average FBT from exposures that produced events was 1.9 + or - 0.8 sec; no dose-response relationship was evident. These exposure-related events were indistinguishable in appearance from random startle events that occurred frequently during task performance. We concluded that, for these studies, the laser exposures caused momentary startles that were probably not true flashblindness incidents.
Visual Compensatory Tracking Performance after Exposure to Flashblinding Pulses. I. Comparison of Human and Rhesus Monkey Subjects ( Book )
1 edition published in 1981 in English and held by 1 library worldwide
To assess the validity of using macaques as human analogues in further flash-blindness studies, three rhesus monkeys and eight human subjects were exposed to identical flashblinding light pulses while performing identical visual compensatory tracking tasks. The light source was a 3400-K tungsten- halogen lamp; optics and shutter were arranged so that a 0.1-sec flash deposited a total energy of 20.7 micro J over a 3-mm-diameter spot on the retina. Flashblindness recovery time was determined by examining the tracking error trace immediately after treatment. A total of 160 human and 97 rhesus treatments were recorded. Average recovery time for the humans was 2.8 + or - 0.6 sec; for the rhesus, 3.2 + or - 1.1 sec. This close agreement was found in spite of different tracking control strategies used by human and rhesus subjects. Rhesus monkeys were judged acceptable as human analogues for this specific type of testing.
The Effect of Glare on Regan Contrast Letter Acuity Scores Using Dye-Based and Reflective Laser Eye Protection ( Book )
1 edition published in 2001 in English and held by 1 library worldwide
Current laser eye protection devices (LEPDs) are dye-based or reflective. While both technologies block the laser wavelengths, reflective LEPDs generally transmit more visible light than do dye-based LEPDs. Consequently reflective LEPDs are generally superior to dye-based LEPDs for the sparse light conditions of night. Reflective LEPDs are also better at maintaining a constant color appearance which is important for tasks requiring recognition of color coded information such as reading color maps or color cockpit displays. The advantages of reflective LEPDS, higher light transmission and better color recognition, need to be considered in association with other optical qualities of reflective LEPDs. One significant measure of optical quality is haze, which tends to be higher in reflective LEPDs. Wearing an LEPD with high haze can accentuate the impact of glare. Glare reduces visual acuity, particularly at low contrast levels. Differences in contrast acuity between dye-based and reflective LEPDs were investigated in the current experiment. Under indoor lighting (photopic) contrast acuity was separately measured with and without glare. In the absence of glare, contrast acuity remained high with all LEPDs. Only small decrements in the ability to identify very low contrast stimuli were found. In the presence of glare, the ability to identify low contrast stimuli was substantially reduced while wearing the reflective LEPDs with higher haze. While reflective LEPDs have been optimized for nighttime use, these data suggest that glare problems from the sun might be experienced while wearing reflective LEPD if protection is required during the day.

1 edition published in 1995 in Spanish and held by 1 library worldwide
1 edition published in 1987 in Spanish and held by 1 library worldwide
