Peace, war and party politics : the Conservatives and Europe, 1846-59 by Geoffrey Hicks( Book )

12 editions published between 2007 and 2014 in English and Undetermined and held by 131 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The book considers the Conservatives' response - in opposition and in government - to the tumultuous era of Napoleon III, the Crimean War and Italian unification. Within a clear chronological framework, it focuses on 'high' politics, and offers an account of the party's foreign policy in government under its longest-serving but forgotten leader, the fourteenth Earl of Derby. It attaches equal significance to domestic politics, examining the Conservatives' attempts to utilise foreign policy in opposition, as they sought advantage against the dominant Palmerston and his liberal allies. It incorporates a new analysis of Disraeli's role in internal tussles over policy, illuminating the roots of the power struggle he would later win against Derby's son in the 1870s
Conservatism and British foreign policy, 1820-1920 : the Derbys and their world by Geoffrey Hicks( Book )

11 editions published between 2011 and 2016 in English and Undetermined and held by 117 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Derbys of Knowsley Hall" have been neglected by historians to an astonishing degree. In domestic political terms, the legacies of Disraeli and his Conservative successors have long obscured their Lancastrian aristocratic predecessors. As far as foreign policy is concerned, twentieth century politics and scholarship have often suggested crude polarities: for example, the idea of 'appeasement' versus Churchillian belligerence has its nineteenth century equivalent in Aberdeen's apparent rivalry with Palmerston. The subtleties of other views, such as those represented by the Derbys, have either been overlooked or misunderstood. In addition, the fact that much crucial archival and editorial work has only been carried out in the last two decades has had a significant impact. Examining a range of topics in domestic and foreign policy, this collection brings a fresh approach to the political history of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries through a series of innovative essays. It will appeal to those with an interest in the decline of the aristocracy, Victorian high politics and the politics of the regions, as well as the Conservative tradition in foreign policy

Crap MPs by Bendor Grosvenor( Book )

3 editions published between 2009 and 2011 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A countdown of the 40 worst Members of Parliament in British political history. You could be forgiven for thinking that our current crop of MPs are a bunch of sleaze-ridden, money-grabbing, self-serving individuals with a tendency to be economical with the truth and less than economical with their expenses. And you may well be right, but are they any worse then their predecessors' In Crap MPs, Grosvenor and Hicks have uncovered the 40 worst MPs* in history - a motley collection of rogues, liars, murderers, shaggers, madmen and criminals, many of whom would have been better off behind bars than running the country (actually some of them did end up in prison). The identity of the final 40 will remain a closely guarded secret until publication date but we can reveal that it includes ten currently serving MPs, one Churchill, several drunks and one poor blighter who was simply in the wrong job at the wrong time. *in their opinion

Analysis of the Central Virginia Community College Spring 1999 Survey of Business and Industry by Geoffrey Hicks( Book )

1 edition published in 1999 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Central Virginia Community College (cvcc) conducted a survey of local employers in spring 1999 to obtain feedback on the college's program offerings and graduates. Surveys were sent to 1,200 businesses, governments and schools in the four-county Region 2000 business/industrial community. Respondents returned 312 surveys for a response rate of 26 percent. Twenty Region 2000 representatives were interviewed in person. The purpose of the survey was to determine the following: (1) preferred evening for-credit course length; (2) which one- and two-year programs were taken by cvcc graduates hired by local employers; and (3) what new programs, for-credit courses, non-credit courses, and weekend courses should be offered by cvcc. Most respondents had no preference regarding evening for-credit course length; those with a preference favored courses under 15 weeks in length. Respondents had hired graduates of over 40 cvcc programs. Two-fifths of graduates hired by local employers had completed business-related programs. Respondents suggested 62 new programs of study and 82 new courses. Common course and program recommendations were most often in the fields of technology, computers and information systems, business management, basic management, health and child care, communications, and interpersonal skills. The survey analysis suggests a widespread market for cvcc offerings and a need for the college to keep the community informed of its services. Includes 12 tables that summarize survey results. (Rdg)
