Per questo, controvoglia, è costretto a tornare nella cittadina natia. Qui Karl fa conoscenza con il piccolo Frank Wheatley - un dodicenne orfano di padre e con la madre che convive con un poco di buono, Doyle Hargraves - e ne diventa subito amico. Per Frank, quasi sempre solo, sofferente per il suicidio del padre, insofferente per la presenza violenta di Doyle, Karl è una specie di figura paterna.
