La sua madre naturale è Cynthia, un'operaia bianca che vive con la figlia Roxanne - anche lei nata da un rapporto occasionale - in una cadente casa nei sobborghi londinesi. Madre e figlia sono in continuo conflitto: Roxanne, insoddisfatta del suo lavoro di netturbina, sfoga la sua frustrazione su Cynthia, depressa per natura e ossessivamente preoccupata per la vita sessuale della figlia, fidanzata con l'introverso Paul. Intanto Maurice, fratello di Cynthia, si divide tra il suo lavoro di fotografo e l'agiata ma triste vita coniugale con Monica, una donna nevrotica, depressa a causa della sterilità, un fatto, questo, che forse ha contribuito ad allontanare anche affettivamente Maurice e Cynthia. Tutto si svolge nella più assoluta normalità e cordialità fino a quando Cynthia non riesce più a tenere per sé la reale identità di Hortense: tra lo sconcerto generale Roxanne abbandona la festa e solo l'intervento di Maurice riesce a farla tornare in sé. La giornata si conclude all'insegna delle reciproche confessioni (Cynthia parla a Roxanne dell'uomo dal quale l'ha avuta e Monica confessa alla cognata di essersi allontanata da lei a causa dell'impossibilità di avere figli) e di una definitiva riconciliazione della famiglia cui appartiene, ormai non più soltanto biologicamente, anche Hortense. Un'ultima sequenza vede Roxanne e la sorellastra, ormai diventate amiche, chiacchierare nel giardino della vecchia casa di Cynthia sotto lo sguardo sereno di quest'ultima
