Peter Shiras (1734-1825) was born at Peterhead, Scotland, the son of Alexander and Margaret Stuary Shiras. He immigrated to America in 1765 and settled at Mount Holly, New Jersey. His great grandson, George Shiras (1832-1924), was born at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the son of George and Eliza Herron Shiras. His family moved to a farm in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, in 1837. He attended the Ohio University for two years and then transferred to Yale, where he received a B.A. and law degree. He practiced law at Dubuque, Iowa, 1856-1858. He married Lillie Kennedy at Pittsburg in 1857. They moved to Pittsburg in 1858, where their two sons were born, 1859-1860. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1881 and appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1892. He retired in 1903. He died at the home of his son

Cet ouvrage est publié à l'occasion de l'exposition du même nom présentée au Musée de la chasse et de la nature, Paris, du 15 septembre 2015 au 14 février 2016.00George Shiras (1859-1942) n'est pas un nom qui existe encore vraiment dans l'histoire de la photographie, et cela alors même que de son vivant ses photos, montrées par exemple à l'Exposition Universelle de Paris en 1900, rencontrèrent un certain succès : mais sa réputation se propagea surtout dans les milieux de la chasse, de la géographie et de la protection de la nature, et c'est d'ailleurs clairement l'orientation qu'il donna à sa plus importante publication, Hunting wild life with camera and flashlight qui fut éditée en 2 volumes (et souvent rééditée entre 1898 et 1935) par la National Geographic Society à Washington.0Sans doute Shiras ne se considérait-il pas lui-même comme un artiste, et même s'il était sensible à la beauté des animaux qu'il fixait sur la pellicule, c'est avant tout dans l'idée de documenter la vie animale, dans une perspective pré-écologique, qu'il travailla toute sa vie durant et qu'il mit au point, dès 1891, le procédé de saisie nocturne, au flash, des animaux sauvages de différentes régions des USA et du Canada, en ayant pour camp de base la région de Marquette, sur la rive sud du Lac Supérieur, où il fut initié à la vie sauvage dès son plus jeune âge.0C'est au contact de chasseurs - et aussi de guides indiens ou de trappeurs - qu'il s'initia à cette vie, finissant par échanger, comme il le dit lui-même, le fusil pour l'appareil photo. Mais ce qui s'impose immédiatement dès que l'on a la chance de regarder quelques-unes des très nombreuses photos que Shiras réalisa de nuit, c'est un théâtre d'apparitions furtives, un monde de feulements et de fuites d'une saisissante beauté
