Extremely popular with amateur choirs, performances with a large ensemble became the rule until well into the 20th century. And the 1960 Electrola recording represents this tradition, with a top-class trio of soloists consisting of the great Elisabeth Grummer, outstanding tenor Josef Traxel and Gottlob Frick, "the blackest of all bass singers"
