About 1830, Dr. Caligari exhibits a somnambulist, Cesare, in a fairground. Cesare tells a student that he will die "before dawn." The student is murdered and his friend suspects Caligari. Caligari orders Cesare to kill a young woman but he attempts to kidnap her instead, is hunted, and dies from exhaustion. Caligari escapes into a lunatic asylum, of which it is learned he is the director, but is finally unmasked as insane. At the end the whole fable is explained as the invention of an inmate of an asylum who imagines the director of the hospital is "Caligari." Both Dr. Caligari and Genuine are examples of the German Expressionist movement
