This collection includes business, personal, and family papers of William Lair Hill, prominent lawyer, judge, and editor of the Oregonian (1872-1877). The collection contains business correspondence (outgoing and incoming) from noted persons including Henry W. Corbett, Zenas F. Moody, James W. Nesmith, Sylvester Pennoyer, and George E. Chamberlain. Additional business papers document Hill's legal practice in Oregon and California, including cases involving Indian war claims, the Oregon Central Railroad, and the Lownsdale estate. The family papers are primarily a collection of letters and memorabilia of Hill's wife, Julia Chandler Hill (1844-1932), her parents, Persis Warren Heald Chandler (1814-1906) and George Clinton Chandler (1807-1881), her children, Edward Coke Hill (1866-1961) and his wife Ella "Billie" Wilson Hill (1877-1962), Margaret Hill Smith (1877-1973), Reuben Chandler Hill, and Heald William Lair Hill. Portions of these letters offer personal accounts of early missionary experiences in the Willamette Valley. Additional genealogical materials on the Hill, Chandler, Lair, and Heald families are located in the genealogical vertical files in the library.
