Smetana's tragic opera 'Dalibor' from 1868 is now acknowledged as a masterpiece, containing some of his greatest music. It tells a tale of knightly ideals, chivalry, love and loyalty, with striking echoes of Fidelio. The story transports us to 15th-century Prague, where Dalibor is imprisoned having avenged the death of his musician friend Zdenk. The sister of his victim, Milada, is touched by his plight and disguises herself as a boy violinist in order to enter the gaol

Deborah Voigt brings sumptuous vocalism and dramatic presence to the title role of Strauss and Hofmannsthal's re-imagination of the Helen myth. Set in the aftermath of the Trojan War, the story is based on the premise that the Helen who came to Troy was a phantom, while the real, faithful one was spirited away. After the war, she is reunited with her husband, Menelas, sung by Torsten Kerl. Diana Damrau is Aithra, the sorceress who helps Helen regain Menelas's love, and Wolfgang Brendel sings Altair, a desert chieftain who falls in love with Helen. Fabio Luisi conducts the ravishing score
Alfonso und Estrella by Franz Schubert( )

3 editions published in 2004 in German and held by 251 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Franz Schubert was a prolific composer, perhaps best known for his symphonies and chamber music, but he also turned his hand to Romantic opera. Despite having no experience of seeing his theatrical works performed on stage, Schubert’s enthusiasm for the genre was not dampened. In 1821, in close collaboration with librettist Franz von Schober, the composer began work on Alfonso und Estrella. He would never see the opera performed during his lifetime, and although it was premiered by Franz Lizst in Weimar in 1854, the work – criticised for its lack of dramatic action – would never make it into the core repertoire. While the opera would not necessarily triumph onstage from a dramatic point of view, a recording is the perfect medium in which to revel in the charming lyricism of the work. This special recording from 1978 brought the opera out of neglect, boasting an impressive list of singers. Schreier is praised for his ‘elegant tones and graceful phrasing’ (Gramophone) in the role of Alfonso, and Mathis brings warmth and sensitivity to the role of Estrella. The cast list also boasts internationally acclaimed baritone, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, whose duet with Herman Prey – in which their voices unite ‘in consummate artistry’ (Gramophone)– is undoubtedly a highlight of the recording."--Publisher's description

Johannes-Passion = St. John Passion : BWV 245 by Johann Sebastian Bach( )

2 editions published in 2002 in German and held by 240 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The foundations of Marc Minkowski's career lie in Baroque music, and he has enjoyed a long relationship with Warner Classics, but this Johannes-Passion (St John Passion) is his first Bach for the label. The work's terse drama--here presented through just nine singers--is ideally suited to both his scrupulous musicianship and his keen sense of theatre. The French conductor describes Bach's great masterpieces as 'a journey you have to prepare for meticulously, over a long period of time. You come back from it like an explorer comes back from Everest or the moon--transformed'"--Warnerclassics.com
