Berlioz's opera about the legendary hot-blooded Florentine sculptor and goldsmith is a rarity. But under James Levine's masterful conducting the huge and complex score dazzles like one of Cellini's artworks. Marcello Giordani is Benventuo Cellini, who must finish a statue of Perseus for Pope Clement (Robert Lloyd) by nightfall or be hanged as a murderer and rapist. Against all the odds, including the conniving of his vicious rival Fieramosca (Peter Coleman-Wright), Cellini's artistry triumphs, and he can finally be with the woman he loves, Teresa (Isabel Bayrakdarian)

Joyce & Tony : live at Wigmore Hall by Joyce DiDonato( )

7 editions published in 2015 in 4 languages and held by 371 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

These two CDs were recorded live at the Wigmore Hall season-opener and at the repeat concert two days later. The first item on the programme was Haydn's dramatic cantata Arianna a Naxos (which, back in 2003, also launched DiDonato's debut recital at Wigmore Hall). As the Guardian wrote, DiDonato excelled in presenting "the abandoned heroine's progression from grief to fury with all her vocal skills to the fore and Antonio Pappano - rarely heard these days as an accompanist, but an absolute master of the art - seconding her every gesture." The Times described the interpretation as "incandescent ... Daring vocal pirouettes, vivid acting, wide dynamic swings, amazing breath control." Then came two songs by a composer who has played a defining role in Joyce DiDonato's operatic career - Rossini (her unforgettable collaboration with Pappano on Il barbiere di Siviglia at Covent Garden is captured on a Warner Classics DVD 5099969458194) - and four luscious late-Romantic numbers written in 1908 by the little-known Neapolitan composer Francesco Santoliquido

Rossini’s effervescent Cinderella story requires singers who can do justice to his daunting vocal writing—like the stellar cast of this broadcast. Joyce DiDonato leads the ensemble as Angelina, the much-maligned girl with a tender heart who wins a prince’s love. New tenor sensation Javier Camarena is that Prince, Don Ramiro, who wants to be loved for himself, not his royal status. Pietro Spagnoli sings Dandini, the prince’s valet, Luca Pisaroni is Alidoro, the philosopher who sets the story in motion, and Alessandro Corbelli sings Don Magnifico, Angelina’s buffoonish father. Met principal conductor Fabio Luisi is on the podium
