An estate agent's clerk (von Wangenheim) leaves his bride (Schroeder) in the city of Bremen to conduct business in the distant Carpathian mountains, with an eccentric client named Graf Orlok (Schreck). However, the closer he gets to his destination, the more terrified become the people he meets. What he finds at Orlok's sinister castle is more horrifying than he could possibly have imagined...This was the very first film to be based on Bram Stoker's now infamous novel "Dracula". Names and locations were changed but Stoker's estate, who had not given permission for the novel to be filmed, recognised the obvious and alarming similarities and sued the producers. An English judge ordered all copies of the film to be destroyed and the original negative burned. Fortunately for us, prints survived in Germany

Das Testament des Dr. Mabuse by Fritz Lang( Visual )

16 editions published between 1933 and 2012 in 3 languages and held by 45 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In 1922 Fritz Lang made the two-part film "Dr Mabuse, der Spieler" ("Dr Mabuse, the Gambler"). He revived his evil genius in 1933 for this talkie sequel which picks up precisely where the original had ended, with Mabuse's madness, capture and incarceration. Mabuse has been in an asylum for ten years, but his crime organisation is still perpetrating an insane orgy of wanton destruction, threats, shoot-outs, thefts, explosions, bombings, burnings, and floodings. Banned by the Nazis, the film is one of Fritz Lang's most inventive crime thrillers

Presents the German and French versions of the feature film, shot on the same sets with different actors. Set in Soho in Victorian London, this musical satire tells of Mack the Knife, ladies man, gentleman and thief, his cohorts and antagonists
Ohm Krüger by Hans Steinhoff( Visual )

3 editions published between 1941 and 2007 in German and held by 30 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This propagandistic epic, seven years in the making, was Goebbels' initial attempt to equal Gone with the wind. It is a heroic portrait of the Boer statesman who recounts his life story as he lay dying in a Swiss hospital. His sons, Jan and Adrian, voice opposing views concerning the validity of their father's struggles during the Boer Wars. Although their ideological debate is handled with some skill, the primary purpose of the film was to stir anti-British feeling. The villainous English incite the African tribespeople by distributing guns during a mission service and to the strains of "Onward Christian soldiers." They feed rotten meat to Boer women and children (in a scene extracted from Eisenstein's Battleship Potemkin) and incarcerate them in the massive concentration camps they have established on South African soil. The viewer is informed that 26,000 women and children were murdered. Ohm Krüger was selected Best Foreign Film at the Venice Festival and designated the first Film of the Nation at home. In an elaborate ceremony, Goebbels awarded its star Emil Jannings the "Ring of Honor of the German Cinema."

Die Brücke Flucht und Vertreibung( Visual )

3 editions published between 1999 and 2007 in German and held by 25 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Hostile appears the crumbling bridge, over which a group of people expelled from the former eastern territories (east of the Oder-Neisse line) arrives into a small, middle German village, as hostile as the villagers themselves, who still hold on to old behavior patterns and close doors before supposed foreigners/strangers. Michaelis, the spokesperson of the refugees, works hard for peaceful coexistence. He offers the mayor the craft skills of his people to repair the bridge, but gets the response "nobody cares about that here". A bridging over between the new and the old seems to become an increasingly remote possibility

Amphitryon by Reinhold Schünzel( Visual )

4 editions published between 1935 and 2009 in German and held by 15 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The plot has its origins in a play by Plautus, which was later adapted by Moliere and Kleist, about Jupiter coming down to Earth to seduce Alkmene, the faithful wife of Amphitryon who is away fighting a war. An operetta film in which the gods are humanised (as kings and politicians were humanised in the pre-Nazi 'Congress Dances'). The Nazi authorities found the film 'artistically valuable' and the iconography and architectural design of Thebes are examples of National Socialist kitsch (c.f. the Nuremberg Stadium in 'Triumph of the Will')
