Uncommon ground : land art in Britain, 1966-1979( Book )

5 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 124 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Uncommon Ground proposes a new reading of British art between the mid-1960s and early 1980s, placing landscape and nature at the heart of the emerging avant-garde movements of the period. During a time of seismic cultural and political change, artists on both sides of the Atlantic turned away from the enclosed space of the gallery and went out into the landscape. Encompassing sculpture, performance, photography, film, Minimalism and Conceptual art--particularly the latter--the wide-ranging practices represented in this book engage with the once-derided and seemingly exhausted genre of landscape. Uncommon Ground includes works by Andy Goldsworthy, Anthony McCall, Antony Gormley, Barry Flanagan, Boyle Family, Bruce McLean, David Lamelas, David Nash, David Tremlett, Derek Jarman, Garry Fabian Miller, Hamish Fulton, Ian Hamilton Finlay, Jan Dibbets, John Hilliard, John Latham, Keith Arnatt, Richard Long, Roelof Louw, Roger Ackling, Roger Palmer, Susan Hiller, Thomas Joshua Cooper and Tony Cragg

2 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 62 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Uwe Wittwer (b. 1954 in Zurich) inquires into and disrupts expectations and viewing habits. The entrancing beauty and sensuousness of his paintings and watercolors lure the viewer into a world of ambiguity. Only a second glance reveals that the apparent aesthetic innocence of the middle class he portrays is actually a kind of latent horror. Captured in a blur, the still lifes, interiors, landscapes, and portraits avoid obvious interpretation, so that the question of what is "real" and what is "fake," where the façade or razzle-dazzle begins and ends, remains open. Fascinated by the imagery of the Old Masters, Wittwer digitally processes the source materials he takes from the Internet and lends them a sense of texture by means of paint, canvas, and paper.0Exhibition: CCA & A Gallery, Hamburg, Germany (10.4.-9.5.2012) / Contemporary Urban Centre, Liverpool, UK (18.5.-23.6.2012) / Somerset House, London, UK (4.7.-27.8.2012) / Haunch of Venison (5-6.2012) / Smac Art Gallery, Capetown, South-Africa (9.2012 -)
