Le laboratoire moraliste : La Rochefoucauld et l'invention moderne de l'auteur by Alain Brunn( Book )

7 editions published in 2009 in French and held by 169 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

1 edition published in 2016 in French and held by 12 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Emblem of an ambivalent century vis-à-vis the arts of representation, iconolatrous as much as iconophobic, Fénelon testifies in his work of a complex of the visible. In him, dialogue in tension the most reticences grades and the strategic interest even the deep taste for the image. The studies gathered here probe and compare the various parts of a diverse body of work that assembles fictions, pedagogical and aesthetic essays, and of course spiritual prose. This scan allows a great plurality of approaches that capture the nuances and even the paradox of the issues and the bases of thought, a belief and a sensitivity both worried and passionate about the power of the image. Partly, Fénelon puts in suspicion, possibly refuses the images, judged risky because seductrices deceptive, illusory (the pure quietist love is fundamentally without vision). But he also knows how to be able to do without the regime of the image, concrete and mental, to touch and to persuade the men to whom he addresses himself and that the senses render incapable to rise spontaneously to the abstraction of the ideas or the faith." --Translated from back cover

Écrire à l'âge classique La Rochefoucaud auteur by Alain Brunn( Book )

3 editions published between 2005 and 2007 in French and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The duke de La Rochefoucauld never saw himself as a writer, yet he acted as an author. He first experienced literacy through some traditionnal genres such as political lampoon and memoirs, out of the public eye, and then published anonymously the Maxims he's still famous for. This work tries to question his writing as a global undertaking, in order to understand the forms and values of classical authorship. La Rochefoucauld's complete works is nothing but a cabinet of curiosities, a place to collect litteracy traces, which you can read, but hardly hear. He experienced the failure of the feudal discourse during the Fronde, therefore he favours the logic of writing over the logic of talking. Hence he collects social, historical and human signs of the interest which dominates man and prevents him from understanding himself. La Rochefoucauld's undertaking is moved by negativity, and in contradiction to itself : his gnomic discourse doesn't teach, even better, it keeps on saying man never knows himself, and that there's nothing left to learn. The hermeneutics of La Rochefoucauld dismisses every hermeneutics, and this unkept promise is the way she fascinates the readers. Through this incomprehensible interest he uses, La Rochefoucauld is recognized as an author

Maxims by François La Rochefoucauld( Book )

1 edition published in 2001 in French and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Deceptively brief and insidiously easy to read, La Rochefoucauld's shrewd, unflattering analyses of human behavior have influenced writers, thinkers, and public figures as various as Voltaire, Proust, de Gaulle, Nietzsche, and Conan Doyle. This is the fullest collection of La Rochefoucauld's writings ever published in English, and includes the first complete translation of the Reflexions diverses (Miscellaneous Reflections). This edition includes an excellent introduction that surveys La Rochefoucauld's life, the genesis of his work, its form and content, and its influence, as well as comprehensive explanatory notes. A table of alternative maxim numbers and an extensive and invaluable index of topics help the reader to locate any maxim quickly and to appreciate the full range of La Rochefoucauld's thought on any of his favorite themes, such as self-love, vice and virtue, love and jealousy, friendship and self-interest, passion and pride. - Publisher
