Tails (poems) by Joanie Mackowski( Book )

TAILS is a manuscript of poems. The title is meant to suggest, in part, the homophone "tales," for the manuscript describes a three-part narrative progress: the speaker moves from unease, to crisis, to resolution. It is called "tails" also to suggest what is colubrine, the error in eros, dubious knowledge, half-understood, seen not full in the face but glimpsed backward. Lastly the title might suggest, to the writer at least, the non-ratiocinative methods of writing poems: the dominant lower brain and brain stem with a headful of color, vibration, and urge. The majority of the poems proceed with close attention to rhyme sounds, though not necessarily to rhyme schemes, in part to unsettle my own habitual logic and authorial control, letting me follow rather than merely direct the sounds of words. This way, my aim is to engage in a writing process that is truly conversational, mutual, and to rise from the conversation changed as much as is the poetic composition. I understand the writing process to be akin to what Roland Barthes describes in "The Death of the Author": rather than seeing authorship as that power to originate a text, to nourish it, to control it, "in the same relation of antecedence to [the] work as a father to his child" (145), the process of writing, which Barthes aligns with the process of reading, "is born simultaneously with the text" (145). Surrendering to the workings of formal structure, which I see to be para-logical elements in that they possess a musical logic but not a discursive one, the process of writing is the process of reading and teasing out. This understanding of the writing process is pedagogically useful. Introducing the manuscript is an essay that describes the quality called poetic voice. The essay asserts that what one understands as poetic voice is not necessarily a free expression from a great soul, a Romantic conception, but can be understood as a cumulative textual vibration, a cohering set of qualities, an orchestration, crafted rather than discovered or bared
