Trama: Il signor Hulot è un singolare personaggio dall'inconfondibile sagoma che vive in una mansarda poco curata, situata in una tranquilla e vitalissima cittadina della provincia francese. Hulot è il cognato del signor Arpel, il direttore della locale fabbrica di materie plastiche, che vive in compagnia del figlioletto Gérard e di sua moglie, la sorella di Hulot, in una casa futurista e superaccessoriata, estremo vanto della famiglia e fonte di ammirazione per gli stupiti vicini di casa. Il direttore della fabbrica cerca di integrare il lunare Hulot cercandogli un impiego nella ditta, ma lo strano individuo viene allontanato pochi minuti dopo aver effettuato il colloquio perché ritenuto responsabile di un comportamento strano ed ingiustificabile. Fallita l'ipotesi d'impiego, Hulot ha tempo a disposizione da trascorrere con il nipotino Gérard, che accompagna in giro per la città per fargli osservare gli aspetti più inconsueti e quindi divertenti dell'esistenza. Durante un surreale party tenutosi a casa del direttore, ad Hulot viene concessa un'ulteriore possibilità di lavoro, ma anche in questo caso riuscirà a fare danni, trasformando un normale tubo di plastica in un'inservibile e grottesca striscia piena di bolle e strozzature. Dopo l'ultimo inconveniente, ad Hulot viene assegnata una nuova funzione che ne motiva il trasferimento fuori città
