Highlights: ZSM-5 catalyst is treated by desilication using Na2 CO3 and then modified with La. Upgrading of pyrolysis vapor is performed in a vacuum system over above catalyst. A higher hydrocarbons yield of 49.86% is obtained with 5wt% La/hierarchical ZSM-5. The coke content is declined to 11.05% compared to that obtained with pure HZSM-5. It exhibited good potential for efficient preparation of high-valued bio-oil. Abstract: Catalytic upgrading of pyrolysis vapor from rape straw was performed in a vacuum pyrolysis system over La/HZSM-5 with hierarchical structure. When 3M Na2 CO3 was used for alkali treatment, the desilication process of HZSM-5 zeolite was highly controllable and the hierarchical porous HZSM-5(Hi-ZSM-5) zeolite was formed. After that, Hi-ZSM-5 was modified by impregnation with lanthanum ion, the acid sites of Lewis increased and the concentrations ratio of Brönsted acid and Lewis acid of the catalyst was improved. The highest hydrocarbons selectivity (49.86%), the lowest carbonyl compounds content (11.06%), and reasonable catalytic stability were obtained by the La/Hi-ZSM-5 catalyst. In addition, La/Hi-ZSM-5 further reduced the coke content of the catalyst to 11.05%, while increasing the selectivity of high value aromatic hydrocarbons. Obviously, La/Hi-ZSM-5 zeolite had high catalytic activity, and exhibited good potential and a beneficial nature for efficient preparation of high-valued bio-oil from rape straw

Effects of the cellulose, xylan and lignin constituents on biomass pyrolysis characteristics and bio-oil composition using the Simplex Lattice Mixture Design method( )

Highlights: Simplex Lattice Mixture Design was firstly applied to study biomass pyrolysis process. Interactions between the constituents had effects on the biomass pyrolysis behavior. Biomass pyrolysis behavior can be predicted based on the ratios of three constituents. Bio-oil composition was affected by the constituents and their pyrolysis products. Abstract: In order to clarify the relationships between biomass pyrolysis mechanism and its main constituents. The effects of main constituents on biomass pyrolysis characteristics were firstly determined by thermo-gravimetric analysis based on the Simplex Lattice Mixture Design to investigate that whether the prediction of the pyrolysis behavior of a certain lignocellulosic biomass is possible when its main constituent contents are known. The results showed that there are constituent interactions in the pyrolysis process, which can be intuitively reflected through the change laws of kinetics parameters. The mathematical models for calculating kinetics values were established, and the models were proved to be valid for predicting lignocellulosic biomass pyrolysis behavior. In addition, the effects of biomass constituents on bio-oil compositions were explored by subsequent vacuum pyrolysis experiments. The xylan pyrolysis had a certain inhibitory effect on the pyrolysis of cellulose, and the pyrolysis products of lignin might promote the further decomposition of sugars from cellulose pyrolysis, while the interaction between xylan and lignin had a little effect on the bio-oil composition

Controlled regeneration of ZSM-5 catalysts in the combined oxygen and steam atmosphere used for catalytic pyrolysis of biomass-derivates( )

Graphical abstract: Highlights: Oxygen and steam were combined as regeneration gas after CFP of biomass derivates. 15% was the optimal oxygen concentration for hydrocarbon formation in cycles. The stable yield of hydrocarbons by 15% oxygen/5% steam was boosted by 31.3%. Controlled regeneration was performed, namely retaining partial catalyst coke. At retaining coke amount was 2.18%, yield of hydrocarbons was promoted by 27.4%. Abstract: Catalyst deactivation by coke deposition was the main barrier in the catalytic pyrolysis of biomass for hydrocarbons, thus deactivated catalysts should be regenerated timely. In this study, several measures were applied in the regeneration process to obtain higher yield of hydrocarbons in the catalytic conversion of biomass-derivates. The effect of oxygen concentration in the regeneration atmosphere on catalytic performance was firstly investigated, and then steam was introduced on the basis of the optimal oxygen concentration to further decrease the internal temperature of catalyst particle. Finally the deactivated catalysts were partially regenerated by retaining some coke. The results showed that 15% was the optimal oxygen concentration, at which the catalysts still showed steady production of olefins and aromatics after 30 cycles of catalysis-regeneration. When 15% oxygen and 5% steam was combined in the regeneration atmosphere, the temperature of catalyst bed was reduced efficiently. The stable yield of hydrocarbons by combined regeneration method was boosted by 31.3% compared with pure 15% oxygen. At retaining coke amount of 2.18%, yield of hydrocarbons was promoted by 27.4% compared with completely regenerated. With the combined oxygen/steam atmosphere and controlled regeneration, the temperature of catalyst particles was well regulated and stable catalysis-regeneration process to produce hydrocarbons via thermochemical utilization of biomass can be realized
