Searching for the wrong-eyed Jesus( Visual )

1 edition published in 2004 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This impressionistic and slightly surreal part pseudo-documentary, part music video, part musical road trip film, commissioned by the British television documentary series Arena to capture the ambiance of the American South and inspired by alt-country singer-songwriter Jim White's similarly titled 1997 album The Mysterious Tale of How I Shouted Wrong-Eyed Jesus, is a haunting southern gothic extravaganza of a collage comprised of staged scenes, stories, confessional interviews and testimonies, zealous churchgoers speaking in tongues, and roadside encounters with various musicians whose musical performances are recorded live on location. This film investigates the intersection of country music and Christianity and the combination of the sacred and the profane, depicting a world that straddles a fine line between a reverence for heaven and a fondness for hell. Accompanied by a 300-pound concrete Jesus bedded in the trunk of a battered 1970 Chevy Impala, Jim White leads a back-roads tour of the rural Deep South, from the bayou country of Louisiana to the mountains of Kentucky and Virginia, with stops at a religiously-themed truck stop; a ghostly junkyard full of abandoned school buses; a roadside juke joint; Pentecostal, Rockabilly and mountain Gospel churches; diners; biker bars; trailer parks; a barber shop/beauty parlor; coal mines and a correctional facility
