The eternal triangle: a rich guy; his bored, beautiful, blond wife; and a rugged stranger, down on his luck and ready for action. What more do you need? In this case, to know that the rich guy is a Turk who is still, despite having spent virtually his entire life in Germany, a permanent outsider. That the hot blond wife has a colorful past and owes large debts (which hubby now holds over her head). That the rugged stranger is a former soldier who received a dishonorable discharge after serving in Afghanistan, living in his dead mother's house. Jerichow is a nondescript spot in the former East Germany, where capitalism still has a somewhat primitive, half-criminal feel. The film conveys a sense of desperation and defeat, and highlights that what can happen at the crossroads of lust, loneliness, and materialism
Phoenix by Christian Petzold( Visual )

Set in a rubble-strewn Berlin in 1945, is like no other film about post-World War II Jewish identity. After surviving Auschwitz, a former cabaret perfromer, her face disfigured and reconstructed, returns to her war-ravaged hometown to seek out the gentile husband who may or may not have betrayed her to the Nazis. Without recognizing her, he enlists her to play his wife in a bizarre hall-of-shattered-mirrors story that's as richly metaphorical as it is preposterously engrossing

The Berlin school : films from the Berliner schule by Rajendra Roy( Book )

2 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 148 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The informal movement that critics like to call the Berlin School," as director Christoph Hochhäusler puts it, is a loose affiliation of filmmakers who emerged around the time the Berlin Wall fell. The founding figures--Thomas Arslan, Christian Petzold, and Angela Schanelec--and their younger colleagues are not bound by a manifesto or by any singular aesthetic. Nonetheless, their observant portrayals of characters in flux offer a compelling cinematic expression of the search for new identities in a time of societal change. The films of the Berlin School have resonated profoundly since the mid-1990s, making it one of the most influential auteur movements to emerge from Europe in the new millennium

"One of the most talked-about world-premieres at this year's Berlinale, Dreileben was also one of the longest: a triple-bill of 90-minute German TV-movies running a total of five-and-a-half hours (with intermissions). Named after a fictional rural area in the east of the country where each of the films takes place, the project arose from e-mail discussions between a trio of respected German writer-directors, Christian Petzold, Dominik Graf and Christoph Hochhäusler. The result is three separate though linked takes on the same manhunt story. Johannes is a happy-go-lucky teen working as an intern at a quiet countryside clinic and involved in an on-off courtship with Sarah, pretty daughter of the institution's chief surgeon. But when he meets Bosnian refugee Ana a more fiery romance quickly develops against the backdrop of a police-search for convicted murderer Molesch. Molesch escaped - with the hapless Johannes' inadvertent assistance - while 'visiting' with his deceased mother at the hospital's mortuary."--Dreileben: Film Review / by Neil Young 1:45 PM PDT 3/14/2011
