A cluster of neighborhoods lies in the heart of Southern California, streets that form a grid between concrete ribbons of freeway. Nearly a quarter of its young men will end up in prison. Many others will end up dead. These neighborhoods in South Los Angeles are home to two of the most infamous African-American gangs, the Crips and the Bloods. On these mean streets over the past 30 years, more than 15,000 people have been murdered in an ongoing cycle of gang violence that continues unabated. Here is where America's most bloody and costly outbreaks in civil unrest erupted - not once, but twice, 27 years and just three miles apart. Combines archival footage with in-depth interviews
Riding giants by Stacy Peralta( Visual )
18 editions published between 2003 and 2009 in 3 languages and held by 674 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Opening with a two-minute animation recapitulating the first 1000 years of surfing history, Riding Giants goes on to summarize the story of the big wave riding. Interviews with legendary big wave surfers, at celebrated breaks from Hawaii's North Shore to California's Mavericks, help explain how surfing became not just a hobby, but a culture and way of life. Viewers without any interest in surfing will come away with a greater appreciation for the sport, and a better understanding of what drives those who have given their lives to it
Stoked the rise and fall of Gator ( Visual )
2 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 128 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Mark 'Gator' Rogowski was a celebrity with a six-figure income at age 17 and at 24 convicted of rape and murder, sentenced to prison for 31 years to life. Sexy, good looking and charismatic, he became one of the faces of skateboarding during that mid-Eighties moment when, as a newly monetized 'sport' it moved from its punk rock roots in Southern California out into Middle America. Utilizing archival footage, extensive interviews of friends, skating contemporaries, business associates, and journalists, along with audio commentary recorded in prison by Gator himself, this film is the result of six years of persistence and investigation. The subject, however, is how the commercialization of a once authentic youth culture curdled the fortunes-and psyche-of its first golden boy

[SDM]
