When the walking defeats you : one man's journey as Joseph Kony's bodyguard by Ledio Cakaj( )

5 editions published between 2016 and 2017 in English and held by 278 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Deep in the Congo's Garamba National Park in the dead of night, Joseph Kony -- the notorious warlord wanted by the International Criminal Court -- made a shocking admission. Loosened by home-made wine, exposing a vulnerability he could never show the world, Kony looked George Omona in the eye, 'You need to know that if I had a choice I would not be doing this ... I wish I could be a man of books, like you.' Three years earlier George was expelled from one of Uganda's best schools, just weeks before he was due to graduate with exemplary grades, destroying his dreams of becoming a teacher. In desperation, his uncle found him a role in Kony's Lord's Resistance Army (LRA). George's education and fluent command of English allowed him to rapidly rise through the ranks, eventually becoming one of Kony's bodyguards, before he finally made his escape. George's story -- based on many hours of interviews with acknowledged LRA expert Ledio Cakaj -- provides a vivid, personal and fascinating insight into the inner workings of the LRA, and the mind of Kony, its self-appointed prophet"--Publisher's description

Old enough to fight : Canada's boy soldiers in the First World War by Dan Black( Book )

2 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 101 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Between 15,000 and 20,000 underage youths, some as young as ten, signed up to fight in Canada's armed forces in the First World War. They served in the trenches alongside their elders, and fought in all the major battles: Ypres, the Somme, Passchendaele, Vimy Ridge, and the rest. Many were injured or suffered psychological wounds. Many died. This is the first book to tell their story. Some boys joined up to escape unhappy homes and workplaces. Others went with their parents' blessing, carrying letters from fathers and mothers asking the recruiters to take their eager sons. The romantic notion of a short, victorious campaign was wiped out the second these boys arrived on the Western Front. The authors, who narrate the fighting with both military professionalism and humanity, portray many boys who, in the heat of battle, made a seamless transition from follower to leader to hero"--Résumé de l'éditeur

Collapse of a country : a diplomat's memoir of South Sudan by Nicholas Coghlan( )

3 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 69 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"As the first Canadian diplomat to be posted to war-torn Sudan, in 2000, Nicholas Coghlan was a natural choice to head up Canada's diplomatic representation in the new Republic of South Sudan, soon after peace talks resulted in the secession of the South in 2011. Coghlan and his wife Jenny were on hand in Juba when, barely two years later, the capital erupted in gunfire and a new civil war began, pitting one half of the army against the other, Vice President Machar against President Kiir, the Nuer tribe against the Dinka. The Coghlans would later be honored by the Government of Canada for their role in helping evacuate dozens of Canadians of South Sudanese extraction who were now forced to flee for their lives. This action-focussed narrative, grounded by accounts of meetings with key players and by travels throughout the dangerous, impoverished hinterland of South Sudan, explains what happened in December 2013 and why. It describes in harrowing terms the ebb and flow of war and the humanitarian tragedy which followed, and the well-meant but often confused and ill-conceived attempts of the international community to mitigate the misery and bring peace back to a land that has rarely known it. South Sudan's civil war simmers on today, largely ignored by the West. Coghlan's stark narrative serves as an object lesson to statesmen, to diplomats, to aid workers and development practitioners. As General (retd) Romeo Dallaire, UN commander at the time of the Rwanda genocide (1994) warns: 'This place smells bad.'"--

Forced to change : crisis and reform in the Canadian Armed Forces by Bernd Horn( Book )

2 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 55 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Undeniably, the 1990s were a period of crisis for the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF). Drastic budget reductions and a series of endless scandals all collided to form the perfect storm. The outcome of this was nothing short of the implosion of the Canadian Armed Forces Officer Corps. Stripped by the government of the right to regulate itself, the Officer Corps, which represented the nation's stewards of the profession of arms, was forced to reform itself. Key to this transformation was education. However, the road was not easy, as cultural change rarely is. Forced to Change tells the story of how the Canadian Armed Forces found itself at its lowest point in history and how it managed to reform itself. The question is whether it was a fundamental transformation or just a temporary adjustment to weather the storm
Ils se battent comme des soldats, ils meurent comme des enfants : pour en finir avec le recours aux enfants soldats by Roméo Dallaire( Book )

5 editions published in 2010 in French and held by 43 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
