Minimalism and maximalism by Jason Gould ( Book )
1 edition published in 2007 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
"Designers look for inspiration and motivation for the creation of their artwork, by studying both contemporary and historical examples of art and design. Many art and design students have spent much of their education in research and the survey of art and design history. Criticism and research are critical in the development of a solid conceptual and aesthetic base from which they develop. By understanding the work which came before the, and to view and think about artwork critically, students are able to produce work which has more meaning to themselves and to their audience. I made an attempt to address current trends in digital art and illustration by examining artwork -- and the concepts behind them -- both from a contemporary and historical approach. Much like a survey course in art and design history, this project presents the work and ideas of some of history's greatest artists. It then addresses how this research can be applied to contemporary art and gives designers a chance to realize how so much of what we do can be attributed to ideas and inspirations from our past. By utilizing technology available in current design applications, we are able to take the information off of the printed page and create a richer environment in which to discuss and view artwork. By presenting the research and artwork in an interactive application such as Flash, we are able to create new ways to learn and experience art and design"--Abstract

Fatigue-induced changes in disynaptic 1A reciprocal inhibition of soleus motor units by Jason Gould ( Book )
1 edition published in 2011 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
An increase in antagonist muscle activation during fatiguing agonist activity is often attributed to a reduction in disynaptic reciprocal inhibition, but few studies directly assess reciprocal inhibition in humans during fatigue. In this study, the reciprocal inhibition of single motor units in humans was assessed during alternating isometric contractions of ankle flexors and extensors. It was hypothesized that during a fatigued state there is a reduction in reciprocal inhibition at the level of the single motor unit that will accompany an increase in co-activation of the antagonist muscle. Intramuscular electromyography was used to assess reciprocal inhibition from the tibialis anterior onto the soleus motoneuron of the right leg in 15 participants (aged 22±1.6 years). Spike-triggered stimulation of common peroneal nerve was used to assess reciprocal inhibition of individual single motor units of the soleus before, during and after the fatigue protocol. Following the fatigue protocol, maximal voluntary force values declined by 29.3% in plantarflexors and 25.5% in dorsiflexors. Relative interspike interval (ISI following antagonist nerve stimulation / ISI without nerve stimulation) decreased from 1.05 ± 0.12 to 0.96 ± 0.099 by the third set of the fatigue protocol. This reduction in the strength of reciprocal inhibition was not accompanied by increased coactivation of the plantarflexors during dorsiflexion. Furthermore, not all motor units demonstrated a reduction in reciprocal inhibition over the course of the fatigue protocol. Therefore, a future direction will be to determine how changes in reciprocal inhibition correlate to changes in firing behaviour during fatigue at the level of the single motor unit
