Whity by Rainer Werner Fassbinder ( Visual )
12 editions published between 2000 and 2012 in German and French and held by 188 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Fassbinder's sole western is set in the late 1800s in the perverse household of Ben Nicholson, his blonde trophy wife Katherine, and two sons, the sadistic Frank and brain-damaged Davy. Whity's mother Marpessa is the family cook, singing freedom songs in the kitchen, but Whity adores the family and puts up with enslavement to please them--until he falls in love with saloon-singer Hanna. Filmed in Spain on the same sets where Sergio Leone staged Clint Eastwood's spaghetti westerns, Fassbinder opts for engulfing décor, a lush, vibrant mise-en-scène, and wizard cinematographer Michael Ballhaus to help infuse the film with his distinct brand of melodramatic intensity

Pioniere in Ingolstadt Pioneers in Ingolstadt ( Visual )
1 edition published in 2001 in German and held by 60 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
A group of military engineers and soldier/laborers arrive in the small town of Ingolstadt, where they will begin the construction of bridge linking it directly with the rest of the country. Alma and Berta are housemaids who see the soldiers as more than a distraction: Berta wants desperately to believe in love, and Alma doesn't believe it can exist. The soldiers are bored, boozing and brawling during their free time, and coldly calculating about the improbability of love. Adapted from a 1929 play by Marieluise Fleisser, the film takes place in Fassbinderland: the Pioneers appear to be young Nazis, Alma's hairstyle and dresses are from the 1940s, but Berta's minidresses are decidedly from the late 1960s. Despite or perhaps because of the arrival of the Pioneers, Ingolstadt's inhabitants seem to be cut off from--yet still part of--the rest of the world, as if the town is encased in glass
The Fassbinder collection ( Visual )
1 edition published in 2006 in German and held by 54 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Martha: While vacationing with him in Rome, virginal 31-year-old librarian Martha Heyer loses her father to a heart attack. She doesn't know it but she has already met Helmut Salomon, her future husband, whom she expects to be the source of her individual and sexual fulfillment. After marriage however, Helmut, with chilling inscrutability, subjects her to constant physical and psychological tortures. Martha is an unrelenting depiction of the methodical way a bourgeois male reduces his wife to a state of absolute subjection, in accordance with Fassbinder's belief that marriage was the only socially accepted form of a completely sadomasochistic relationship
Early Fassbinder ( Visual )
1 edition published in 2013 in German and held by 52 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
From the very beginning of his incandescent career, the New German Cinema enfant terrible Rainer Werner Fassbinder refused to play by the rules. His politically charged, experimental first films were influenced by the work of the antiteater, an avant-garde stage troupe that he had helped form in Munich. Collected her are five of those fascinating and confrontational works: Love is Colder than Death; Katzelmacher; Gods of the Plague; The American Soldier; and Beware of a Holy Whore

When the object of his affection off-handedly commented "too bad you're not a girl", Erwin disappeared to Casablanca and returned as Elvira. Now, adrift and alone amid the maze of the streets of Frankfurt, Elvira revisits the people and places of his past, desperately searching for the identity and love she's never known. Fassbinder's most personal film defies categorization, equal parts melodrama, dark comedy, tragedy, and almost clinical character study, and is ultimately a tender and moving portrait of a lost and fragile soul

Krieg und Frieden & Der Kandidat ( Visual )
2 editions published between 1982 and 2007 in German and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"This two-hour documentary and fiction film was a cooperative writing effort by five different German writers and/or directors. Böll was responsible for three fictive episodes at the end of the film that promote an anti-nuclear, pro-peace message ("Space Talk," "Atom Bunker," and "Kill Your Sister"). Documentary footage of Chancellors Helmut Kohl and Helmut Schmidt in action, along with various European and American leaders highlight the urgent issues of the day. At a time when this film partly addresses these issues and partly hedges its bets, religious leaders in Europe were coming out with a very strong anti-war statement."--Allmovie
