Isabel I Reina de Inglaterra (Greenwich 1533 Richmon 1603). Hija de Enrique VIII y de Ana Bolena. Pasó su infancia alejada de la corte. La sexta esposa de Enrique VIII, Catalina Parr, se encariñó con la joven Isabel y la llevó de nuevo a la corte. Permaneció al cuidado de Catalina a la muerte de Enrique VIII en 1547. Subió al trono a la muerte de su hermanastra María Tudor en 1558 hasta 1603. Una de sus primeras medidas fue restablecer el protestantismo y configurar oficialmente el anglicanismo. Desde el principio de su reinado, el estado civil de Isabel I fue objeto de preocupación política, dado que su soltería no permitía facilitar herederos al trono de Inglaterra. Las conspiraciones católicas comenzaron a proliferar y para evitarlas ordenó encarcelar y ejecutar a su prima católica, la reina escocesa María I Estuardo en 1587. Fomentó el comercio marítimo y fundó la colonia de Virginia. Escritores como Edmun Spenser y William Shakespeare crearon sus obras durante el reinado de Isabel I. Murió el 23 de marzo de 1603 en Londres, sucediéndola al trono, Jacobo de Inglaterra, primer monarca de la dinastía Estuardo
