Raimunda lebt mit ihrer Tochter Paula und ihrem Mann Paco in einem Vorort Madrids. Ihre Mutter ist, so glaubt sie, vor zwei Jahren bei einem Feuer ums Leben gekommen und zusammen mit ihrer Schwester Sole pflegt sie regelmäßig das Grab. Ausserdem kümmert sie sich rührend um ihre Tante Paula, welche schon alt und krank ist. Und da ist auch noch Agustina, eine Freundin, deren Mutter ebenfalls nach dem Feuer auf mysteriöse Weise verschwunden ist. Raimundas Göttergatte Paco ist leider keine große Hilfe beim alltäglichen Lebenskampf - er sitzt lieber vorm Fernseher, trinkt Bier und ist zudem auch noch unbeeindruckt, als er seinen Job verliert (Hauptsache das Fußballspiel im Fernsehen geht weiter). Als ihm Raimunda des nächtens ihre Liebesdienste verwehrt, holt er sich ohne Rücksichtnahme auf seine ausgepowerte Frau neben ihr einen runter. Am nächsten Tag geschieht dann das Unerwartete: Paula beichtet ihrer Mutter als sie von der Arbeit nach Hause kommt, dass Paco über sie hergefallen sei und sie ihn deshalb mit einem Messer ermordet hat. Außerdem soll er behauptet haben, gar nicht Paulas Vater zu sein. Und während Raimunda noch mit den Aufräumarbeiten in der Küche beschäftigt ist, erreicht sie auch schon die nächste Hiobsbotschaft: Tante Paula ist ebenfalls ins Reich der Toten übergewechselt. Dass es auch andersrum geht, beweist dafür Irene, die Mutter von Raimunda und Sole, die zwei Jahre lang versteckt bei Tante Paula gelebt hat, und alle im Glauben ließ sie sei tot.
