This collection is in three parts. The first part is biographical notes, 1903-1947 is further divided into volumes entitled: (1) Groton and Harvard, 1912; (2) American Embassy, London, 1913; (3) Dept. of State, 1916; (4) Aviation Signal Corps, 1919; (5) Mass. Aeronautics Comm., 1936; (6) N.Y. Stedman Hanks & Co. Airports, 1940; (7) Army Air Corps, 1941; (8) Europe-Airlines, I.C.A.O., 1947; (9) U.S. Congress, 1947; (10) Army Air Forces, 1948. The second part is a "catalogue of political and historical collections" (1961) including literature, donations (this one and to other institutions), memorials, miniatures, daguerreotypes, portraits, works of art, and tombstones. The third part is "notes" or draft for a proposed book "Making of an American" (1974). There are two genealogical charts (1967, 1969 rev.) on the Hanks family and allied family ancestry. Many of these volumes contain charts and mounted photographs

Stedman Shumway Hanks was an aviation engineer and genealogist. Hanks was best known for patenting "flight strips," auxiliary landing areas for aircraft alongside public highways, advocating for their development and implementation in various parts of the country in the 1930s. This collection consists of twelve volumes and other family papers containing correspondence, photographs, genealogical charts, clippings, printed material, wills and other family papers compiled by Hanks in the course of his genealogical research on the Hanks, Johnston, Shumway, and allied families
