Prof. Geoff Marcy, Astronomy Dept., UC Berkeley explains that over 100 extrasolar planets have been found, all discovered by the gravitational perturbation of the host star. Most planets reside in multiple-planet systems, and dynamical resonances among planets are common. Most planets (except the closest ones) reside in quite non-circular orbits, unlike the planets in our Solar System. The sizes and ellipticities of the orbits, along with the resonances, imply a host of physical processes that shape the architecture and diversity of planetary systems in general. Planets with orbits and masses similar to our Jupiter are now being revealed, serving as signposts of planetary systems similar to ours.
