The search for alien worlds
(

)
1 edition published in 1997 in English and held by 136 libraries worldwide Mankind's search for planets and the presence of life beyond our solar system. Planet hunters Geoff Marcy and Paul Butler examine what they believe is a previously undiscovered solar system and identify planets that may even support life. Also explores the latest efforts in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence and goes behind the scenes as scientists prepare to look for evidence of primitive life on Mars through missions such as Pathfinder. Combines live-action sequences, state-of-the-art computer animation and spectacular high-resolution images from powerful new telescopes.
Extra solar planets

)
1 edition published in 2002 in English and held by 2 libraries worldwide Prof. Geoff Marcy, Astronomy Dept., UC Berkeley explains that over 100 extrasolar planets have been found, all discovered by the gravitational perturbation of the host star. Most planets reside in multiple-planet systems, and dynamical resonances among planets are common. Most planets (except the closest ones) reside in quite non-circular orbits, unlike the planets in our Solar System. The sizes and ellipticities of the orbits, along with the resonances, imply a host of physical processes that shape the architecture and diversity of planetary systems in general. Planets with orbits and masses similar to our Jupiter are now being revealed, serving as signposts of planetary systems similar to ours.
