"This collection explores built environments and visual narratives in Asia via cartography, icons and symbols in different historical settings. It grows out of a three-year project focusing on cultural exchange in the making of Asia's boundaries as well as its architectural styles and achievements. The editors -- architectural scholars at University of Delaware, Seattle University, University of Washington and Harvard University, respectively -- attracted contributions from Asia, Europe, and North America. The manuscript consists of three sections -- in Mapping Asia: Architectural Symbols from Medieval to Early Modern Periods, authors examine icons and symbols in maps and textual descriptions and other early evidence about Asian architecture. Incorporating archival materials from Asia and Europe, the essays present views of Asian architecture seen from those who lived on the continent, those who saw themselves residing along the margins, and those who identified themselves as outsiders. The second section, Conjugating Asia: The Long-Nineteenth Century and its Impetus, explores the construction of the field of Asian architecture and the political imagination of Asian built environments in the nineteenth century. It discusses the parallel narratives of colonialism and Orientalism in the construction of Asia and its architectural environment, mapping how empire-expanding influences from Europe and North America have defined "Asia" and its regions through new vocabularies and concepts, which include, among others, "Eurasia, " "Jap-Alaska, " "Asie coloniale, " "the Orient, " and "Further India." The third section, Manifesting Asia: Building the Continent with Architecture, addresses the physical realization of "Asian" geographic ideas within a set of specific local and regional contexts in the twentieth century. It examines tangible constructions as legible documents of these notional constructions of Asia, and discusses their construction processes, materials and critical receptions as evidence of the physical's reciprocal relationship to the conceptual. After World War I, architects around the world aspired to transcend national boundaries devastated by conflicts, resulting in a flurry of artistic creativity. In Japan, a generation of young architects strove to create international architecture, or kokusai kenchiku, a product of increasing international travel and communication, growth of the mass media, and technological innovation. Ken Tadashi Oshima traces the many interconnections between architects from Japan, Europe, and America and their designs during the inter war years by examining the careers and buildings of three leading modernists in Japan: Yamada Mamoru (1894-1966), Horiguchi Sutemi (1895-1984), and Antonin Raymond (1888-1976). Each espoused a new architecture encompassing modern forms and new materials, and all attempted to synthesize the novel with the old in distinctive ways. Combining wood and concrete, paper screens and sliding/swinging glass doors, tatami rooms and Western-style chairs, they achieved an innovative merging of international modernism and traditional Japanese practices. Their buildings accommodated the demands of modern living while remaining appropriate to Japan's climate, culture, and economy. Until now, little scholarship on Japanese modernist architecture has been available in English, and scholars have tended to isolate the Japanese work from architecture in the European-American sphere of influence. Oshima reverses this trend, exploring the influences that flowed in multiple directions between architects in Japan and their counterparts in Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, and elsewhere. This project is inspired by urban phenomena in Japan, particularly those conditions that result from a rapidly changing urban form. One of the most significant effects of this rapid rate of change is the presence of gaps in the urban fabric. This thesis engages with the gaps in the Sakaemachi neighborhood of central Kobe as representative spaces of change, addressing the issues of temporality, questioning the void as a negative space, and offering a proposal to exploit the gap. This project envisions Sakaemachi's gaps as a collection to be curated, creating an infrastructure that supports this network of gaps as an 'art site', filling them with temporary site-specific installations and inviting the public to transgress the void
