Als er den schüchternen Buchprüfer Leo Bloom kennenlernt, kommt ihm jedoch ein genialer Gedanke: Gemeinsam mit Bloom wird er das schlechteste Stück aller Zeiten am Broadway herausbringen, seine Geldgeber - besagte alte Damen - mit jeweils 25 Prozent am "Gewinn" beteiligen, das Stück nach der misslungenen Premiere absetzen und sich, dank Blooms kreativer Buchführung, mit den als Verlust abgeschriebenen Millionen Produktionskosten ein schönes Leben in Rio machen. "Frühling für Hitler" ist bei weitem das deprimierendste Stück, das die beiden nach intensiver Suche finden können, genau der Stoff, aus dem Megaflops sind. Was sein Autor Franz Liebkind, ein unbedarfter "Bilderbuch-Nazi", der unter seinem Stahlhelm nur Gedanken an den Führer hegt, zu Papier gebracht hat, ist so abgrundtief schlecht, daß die Produzenten in spe entzückt frohlocken. Damit das Fiasko vollends gelinge, wird der notorisch erfolglose Musicalspezialist Roger De Bris als Regisseur angeheuert. Hauptdarsteller der Nazi-Bühnenposse wird ein abgetakelter Sänger, der Hitler als debile Tunte wiedergibt. Eigentlich beste Voraussetzungen für einen grandiosen Mißerfolg. Der zukünftige Reichtum seiner Produzenten scheint ungefährdet, doch man hat die Rechnung ohne das Publikum gemacht
