Mekas filmed this play about a Marine Corps prison on the stage of the Living Theatre after it had been closed down by the police for tax evasion. He and the cast slipped into the theater through a coal chute and made the film in five hours. The furious rhythms of the play convey the inhumanity of military discipline with the raw force of a battle document

A film diary of Jonas Mekas' trip to his homeland after a 27 year period, shot in single-frame style, and divided into three parts. Part 1 is footage of the filmmaker's first years in America in the early 1950's in Brooklyn. Part 2 shows his return visit after a 25 year absence to the Lithuanian village where he was born, his reunion with his mother and related celebrations. The third part begins in Elmshorn, a suburb of Hamburg, where the filmmaker spent a year in a forced labor camp during the war. The film then moves on to the Monastery of Krems-muenster, the Stammdorff Castle of Nitsch, the house of Wittgenstein and ends with the burning of the Vienna fruit market, August, 1971

"The Brig" war ein Theaterstück, das den Alltag in einem amerikanischen Millitärgefängnis in knallharten Szenen, fast ohne Worte schildernte. Aufgeführt wurde es vom amerikanischen "Living Theatre", einer künstlerischen Vereinigung, an der sich in den 60er Jahren die Geister schieden. Die Aufführungen der avantgardistischen Truppe waren von schockierendem Realismus und unverblümter Systemkritik geprägt. Nach mehreren erfolgreichen New Yorker Inszenierungen mußte das Theater wegen Steuer- und Mietschulden schließen, das Ensemble schlug sich in Europa durch. Jonas und Adolfa Mekas, zwei der bekanntesten Vertreter des unabhängigen "New American Cinema", das ebenfalls in den 60er Jahren aufkeimte, filmten eine der "Brig"--Aufführungen im Stil einer aktuellen Reportage
