An attempt to gauge the spirit of West Germany in the autumn of 1977. Draws its title and some of its inspiration from a satire written by Heinrich Heine in 1844 attacking the monarchy, German philistinism and politics and the tendency of the fragmented German peoples to revere the Middle Ages. This compilation, supervised by Kluge, of the work of twelve filmmakers in sixteen segments, is similarly wide ranging in its attack and incorporates both staged and found material
Herzog/Kinski collection ( Visual )
in German and held by 90 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In the first film of the collaboration between Werner Herzog and Klaus Kinski, Don Lope de Aguirre dreams about conquering South America and leads his army on a doomed mission into oblivion. Jonathan Harker embarks on a long journey over the Carpathian Mountains to finalize real estate arrangements with a wealthy nobleman, little realizing that he is about to become involved with a dangerous vampire, Nosferatu. The third film in the collection, Woyzeck, focuses on a soldier battered beyond endurance by abuse from commanding officers, doctors and even his faithless wife. Fitzcarraldo has a mighty dream, to bring Enrico Caruso and Sarah Bernhardt together in a remote town in Peru for one great performance of Grand Opera. To achieve this he will have to overcome almost unsurmountable odds. Cobra Verde was a 19th century Brazilian bandit who is sent on a deadly mission to re-open the slave trade in West Africa. In meeting his mission he goes on to lead an army of women in a war against the local king. My best fiend is a film about the love-hate relationship between Werner Herzog and Klaus Kinski, two creative geniuses of the film industry

Lance Hackett is a sympathetic geologist working in Australia for an uranium mining company who must confront the passive resistance of the aborigine tribes. For the aboriginal people, the place where the deposits lay is considered the place "where the green ants dream" and for them this place is considered the origin of all life. In the clash with white imperialism, we see the irrevocable tragedy of false progress, in which civilization has lost touch with nature and the universe
Krieg und Frieden & Der Kandidat ( Visual )
1 edition published in 2009 in German and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"This two-hour documentary and fiction film was a cooperative writing effort by five different German writers and/or directors. Böll was responsible for three fictive episodes at the end of the film that promote an anti-nuclear, pro-peace message ("Space Talk," "Atom Bunker," and "Kill Your Sister"). Documentary footage of Chancellors Helmut Kohl and Helmut Schmidt in action, along with various European and American leaders highlight the urgent issues of the day. At a time when this film partly addresses these issues and partly hedges its bets, religious leaders in Europe were coming out with a very strong anti-war statement."--Allmovie
