Die Magdalenen-Heime in Irland wurden geleitet von den Barmherzigen Schwestern (Sisters of Mercy). Ihr Auftraggeber: die katholische Kirche. Familien und Waisenhäuser schickten dorthin junge Mädchen. Waren sie erst einmal dort, wurden sie eingesperrt und mussten in Wäschereien arbeiten, um dabei ihre Sünden zu bereuen. Diese "Sünden" waren unterschiedlichster Art: Ausreichend war die Tatsache, eine unverheiratete Mutter zu sein oder zu hübsch oder zu hässlich. Zu dumm oder zu schlau. Oder das Mädchen war Opfer einer Vergewaltigung und hatte es gewagt, darüber zu sprechen. Um diese Sünden zu bereuen, arbeiteten die Mädchen 364 Tage im Jahr ohne jeden Lohn, man ließ sie hungern, sie wurden geschlagen, verspottet und vergewaltigt. Und ihre neugeborenen Kinder wurden ihnen weggenommen - wenn es sein musste, mit Gewalt. Ihre Strafe war unbeschränkt - oft lebenslänglich. Tausende von Frauen lebten und starben in diesen Anstalten. Das letzte Magdalenen-Heim in Irland wurde 1996 geschlossen, vor gerade einmal sechs Jahren
