The Organizational Culture and Structure of Accelerated Schools by Susan Steaffens( Book )

1 edition published in 2002 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

This paper describes the organizational culture and structure of five accelerated schools in the Clark County School District in Nevada, focusing on the similarities and differences among these schools. The cultural aspects of the schools under comparison included the guiding principles, the central values, and the learning philosophy, whereas the structural components were derived from standard questionnaires. Two instruments, the Organisational Culture Assessment Inventory and the Structural Properties Questionnaire, were sent to 277 teachers in the district, with 97 usable responses returned. The results revealed common descriptions of the culture and structure of the five schools. Many of the teachers used the words "diverse" and "transient" when describing their schools, community, or students. "Hardworking" and "dedicated" were frequent descriptors of teachers, and the schools were described as happy, safe, fun, active, and busy. Principals were seen as effective, gentle, kind, caring, positive, supportive, and visionary. Furthermore, the impact of the principal on the cultural and structural aspects of the schools was evident in all of the schools. Overall, the cultural aspects of guiding principles, central values, and powerful learning philosophy drive the structural aspects of the Accelerated Schools Process, the Inquiry Process, and the governance structure. Several areas for future study are suggested. (Contains 5 references.) (Rjm)
The relationship of the job satisfaction of school business professionals in New York State to selected conditions of service by Joel Michael Pollak( Book )

1 edition published in 1988 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

A projected shortage of school business professionals in New York State through the year 2000 focuses interest on identifying factors associated with this shortage. Job satisfaction is considered such a factor. This study determines the degree of job satisfaction of practicing school business professionals in New York State and its relationship to selected conditions of service. Five factors, based primarily on the theories of Maslow (1954) and Herzberg (1971), are identified as components of job satisfaction. These are advancement, pay, recognition, security, and work itself. A survey questionnaire developed for this study is used to collect data from the entire population of school business professionals in New York State as identified by the New York State Association of School Business Officials. The relationships between the conditions of service are also examined and the study presents arguments for considering school business management to be a profession

The model of planned change acknowledges that staff-administrator harmony is important to the process. This study demonstrated that harmony must be firmly established prior to the introduction of changes in the organization. In this district, the change process did not contribute to harmony and in fact undid what had been previously established
A Model for Rural School Consolidation: Making Sense of the Inevitable Result of School Reform by Craig Cummins( Book )

1 edition published in 1997 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Passage in 1989 of Oklahoma's education reform bill, H.B. 1017, provided encouragement and financial rewards for use of consolidation as a reform strategy, but this approach is often met with anxiety and hostility from stakeholders. In an effort to identify strategies that facilitate consolidation, semistructured interviews were conducted with the superintendents of 16 rural Oklahoma school districts that had participated in 8 voluntary consolidations. The superintendents discussed strategies used to enhance the consolidation process for teachers, parents and community, students, support staff, administrators, and board members, as well as strategies that proved unproductive. Thirteen successful strategies were identified. Addressing the number one staff issue--job security--all eight consolidated districts guaranteed the positions of administrators and support staff, while five new districts retained their entire teaching staff. Keeping staff informed and providing employee displacement compensation were other staff strategies. Maintaining all school sites greatly enhanced the consolidation process for students and community members; this was accomplished in six consolidations. Other student and community strategies included community meetings, media releases, focus on the student benefits of consolidation, and joint student-body activities. Administrative issues were addressed through preconsolidation administrative appointments, joint board meetings, extensive planning, and state assistance. Contains 25 references and 16 data tables.
