"In an attic apartment in the Latin Quarter of Paris, a group of young artists are living together in poverty. Their neighbour, the little seamstress Mimi, introduces herself, seeking a light for her candle, when Rodolfo is left alone. They fall in love. At the Café Momus Rodolfo presents Mimi to his friends, while the singer Musetta abandons her elderly rich lover Alcindoro in order to join Marcello. Alcindoro is left to settle the bill for all of them. Time has passed. Mimi has lived with Rodolfo, but they quarrel, because of his apparent jealousy. He has planned to leave her, as we learn in a scene set on a cold winter morning by the city gates. Musetta, a contrast in character to the gentle Mimi, later returns to the attic apartment of the four young men, bringing with her the dying Mimi, whom they now try to comfort, but in vain, as she dies before their eyes of the consumption that has racked her."--Www.naxos.com (as viewed on Apr. 18, 2007)

In return, Monterone curses Rigoletto. Later, Rigoletto's daughter, Gilda, returns from her convent schooling. She soon falls in love with a poor student, who is really the Duke in disguise. The courtiers take their revenge on Rigoletto by abducting Gilda and taking her to the Duke, assisted by a blindfold Rigoletto, who thinks he is helping the abduction of Countess Ceprano. Rigoletto desperately tries to convince his daughter that the Duke is not a man of honor. Meanwhile, he hires an assassin to kill the Duke. However, Gilda dresses as a man and the assassin kills her instead of the Duke
Die Zauberflöte by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart( Visual )

11 editions published between 2000 and 2004 in 3 languages and held by 16 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Three worlds meet in this opera: the underworld (of the Queen of the Night and Monostatos), the world of simple, sensuous humans (of Papageno and Papagena), and the world of enlightened, wise humanity (of Sarastro and his priests). The truly searching and loving man who is ready to make sacrifices (Tamino) has to pass through all three of these worlds courageously and steadfastly, before he is initiated into the order of noble-minded, enlightened men. However, only men can experience such growth directly, while women (Pamina) can only accompany men but not strive for the same goals with them

The magic flute by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart( Visual )

2 editions published in 2000 in German and held by 11 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The strangest of Mozart's operas is on the one hand the beguiling story of lovers in jeopardy, as transparent and enjoyable as any pantomime; on the other, an opaque allegory that has occasioned more interpretative speculation than any opera outside the canon of Richard Wagner. Ultimately, the esoteric meaning is less important than the overt subject matter, which is conveyed through a consistently entertaining mix of popular tunes, high-art arias, solemn Gluck-like drama and bel canto display. For this Zurich Opera staging, designed by Philip Prowse, Jonathan Miller has set Mozart's opera in the time of its creation: 1791, just after the French Revolution and the fall of the Bastille"--Verso du conteneur

The great Jessye Norman is Ariadne, the mythological heroine abandoned by her lover on the island of Naxos. In Strauss and Hofmannsthal's charming opera-within-an-opera, she is joined by Ruth Ann Swenson as Zerbinetta, the flirtatious leader of a commedia dell'arte troupe that--by order of an eccentric patron--unexpectedly finds itself in the middle of Ariadne's tragic story. Thomas Moser sings Bacchus, the young god who wins Ariadne, and Susanne Mentzer is the Composer of the fictional opera. Wagnerian bass-baritone Thomas Stewart makes a late-career cameo appearance as the Music Master
