Dr. Blinder describes the high and rising inequality in wages in the United States and how this trend impacts the growth of the U.S. economy. Though some causes of this inequality remains unaccountable, Blinder cites outsourcing and downsizing as negatively affecting middle and lower wage workers. He notes that companies are retraining and reinvesting in the workforce at higher wage levels but not lower. He cites the decline of unions as weakening the wage status of middle and lower level wage earners and the static condition of minimum wage as contributing to inequality in wages. Dr. Blinder believes that education, starting with prenatal care, which emphasizes early childhood education and is geared to the skills most in demand as well as a committment to develop our human capital can reverse this trend of inequality in wages
