Résumé: Drame. En Nouvelle-Zélande, Paikea, une Maorie âgée de douze ans, vit avec ses grands-parents issus du clan Ngati Konohi. Sa naissance fut une grande tragédie: sa mère et son frère jumeau sont morts après l'accouchement, son père s'est exilé en Allemagne et son grand-père Koro ne s'est jamais remis du décès de son petit-fils qui était destiné à devenir le chef du clan. Aujourd'hui, Koro cherche un successeur en enseignant la tradition orale aux garçons du village, mais Paikea défie son grand-père en suivant les leçons, interdites aux filles. Le taciturne Koro ne peut admettre que Paikea puisse honorer le nom qu'elle porte, celui de leur ancêtre qui, selon la légende, arriva sur la côte à dos de baleine il y a mille ans.
