A Jewish family emigrates from Germany to Kenya in 1937. The husband works as a manager on a farm and his wife has trouble adapting to the tough, lonely life. Only their daughter quickly makes contact with the natives. When the war breaks out, the family is first interned but then released. The man joins the army, the daughter attends boarding school and the woman continues to live on the farm. After the war, the family returns to Germany, but not without a certain reluctance
