Global Brazil and U.S.-Brazil relations by Council on Foreign Relations( )

12 editions published between 1900 and 2011 in English and held by 1,381 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Brazil has emerged as both a driver of growth in South America and an active force in world politics in the decade since the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) convened its first Independent Task Force on the country. During this period, Brazil has lifted nearly thirty million of its citizens out of poverty, significantly expanded its middle class, become increasingly active within multilateral institutions and international forums, and weathered the recent worldwide recession -- all in a peaceful, market-oriented, and democratic context. To be sure, Brazil is still contending with important internal concerns -- its remaining poor, the growing challenges of climate change, and its ongoing transformation from a commodity-based to an industrial economy, to name just a few. Nevertheless, the message of this report could hardly be clearer: Brazil matters not just regionally but globally. Its decisions and actions will affect the world's economy, environment, and energy future as well as prospects for diplomacy and stability. Brazil is on the short list of countries that will most shape the twenty-first century. U.S. and Brazilian foreign policy must adjust accordingly.--from Foreword
The industrial practice of chemical process engineering by Samuel W Bodman( Book )

9 editions published in 1968 in English and held by 375 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume of case studies serves as a guide and reference manual for the application of engineering science fundamentals in the solution of chemical development and process design problems. The introductory chapter describes a set of general principles relevant to the analysis of industrial design problems. An extensive bibliography is presented which provides a valuable theoretical and practical basis for proper understanding of the case studies. The six case studies present an opportunity for the detailed application of the broad principles outlined in the introduction. These cases vary widely both in regard to the engineering operations analyzed and with respect to the complexity and detail of the required solution. Three of the analyses result in computer programs which may be utilized for a more comprehensive design evaluation and for student discussion in a "computerized classroom."Each case represents a useful approach to a general class of design studies, and each has been reviewed by an industrial or academic expert familiar with current commercial practice. Therefore, even though the reproduction of specific industrial designs has not been attempted, each solution has been compared and contrasted with the realities of modern industrial operations.Various approaches to the financial evaluation of a chemical project are described. These are presented in some detail since material of this type is frequently absent from academic curricula

Our Changing Planet: The U.S. Climate Change Science Program for Fiscal Year 2009( Book )

2 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Our Changing Planet: The U.S. Climate Change Science Program for Fiscal Year 2009 describes the activities and plans of the Climate Change Science Program (CCSP), which incorporates the U.S. Global Change Research Program established under the Global Change Research Act of 1990, and the Climate Change Research Initiative that was established by the President in 2001. CCSP coordinates and integrates scientific research on climate and global change supported by 13 participating departments and agencies of the U.S. Government. This Fiscal Year 2009 edition highlights recent advances and progress supported by CCSP-participating agencies in each of the program's research and observational elements, as called for in the Strategic Plan for the U.S. Climate Change Science Program released in July 2003, and later modified in the 2008 CCSP Revised Research Plan. The document describes a wide range of activities. It provides details on progress towards understanding the ongoing and projected effects of climate change on nature and society, such as the relationship between climate change and shifts in storm tracks and how this may affect water availability in the southwestern United States. The document also describes how observational and predictive capabilities are being improved and used to create tools to support decisionmaking at local, regional, and national scales to cope with environmental variability and change. The report also describes the program's 21 scientific synthesis and assessment products and its recently completed Scientific Assessment of the Effects of Global Change on the United States. To date, eight of the synthesis and assessment products have been completed and the remaining products will be completed in the coming months. These products are being widely disseminated and briefed to stakeholders, including Congress. They are also providing important input to CCSP's ongoing strategic planning

The document also describes how observational and predictive capabilities are being improved and used to create tools to support decisionmaking at local, regional, and national scales to cope with environmental variability and change. The document outlines how CCSP plans to continue implementation of the Strategic Plan during FY 2008. The program will continue to emphasize work on 21 scientific synthesis and assessment products, three of which have been completed. The remaining products are well underway. CCSP is committed to its mission to facilitate the creation and application of knowledge to the Earth's global environment through research, observations, decision support, and communication
