A l'opéra, le diable est un rôle en or, qui brûle les planches. Dans son ultime chef-d'œuvre, créé quelques mois après sa mort, Offenbach déguise même son Méphisto sous quatre identités : le conseiller Lindorf (prologue et épilogue), le physicien Coppélius (premier acte), le Dr Miracle (acte central) et Dapertutto, le proxénète des bas-fonds vénitiens, au tableau final. A ces quatre incarnations du mal font pendant les quatre égéries vainement aimées par Hoffmann, poète plus chanceux en alcool qu'en amour : la Stella, diva sans foi, Olympia, poupée sans âme, Antonia, ange sans avenir, et Giulietta, prostituée sans cœur. Cette quête chimérique d'un amour impossible arrache à la musique d'Offenbach des envolées grandioses (trio final du deuxième acte), de sarcastiques parodies (les vocalises mécaniques d'Olympia) ou de voluptueuses ivresses (la fameuse barcarolle). Extase, vertige, désespoir : c'est le théâtre de la cruauté à son apogée, exigeant l'imagination d'un véritable homme de scène. Olivier Py est l'implacable ordonnateur de ces naufrages.
