How do we know? : understanding in science and theology by Dirk Evers( )

8 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 1,275 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book considers the nature of knowledge in science and religion and critically examines the relation between these two domains of human knowledge and convictions. Is religious belief knowledge? If so, what kind of knowledge is it? What kind of knowledge is science? And how are religious beliefs and scientific claims of knowledge justified? All these are issues at the centre of public debates on the relation between science and religion
Issues in science and theology : what is life? by European Society for the Study of Science and Theology( )

8 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 238 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book explores the concept of Life from a range of perspectives. Divided into three parts, it first examines the concept of Life from physics to biology. It then presents insights on the concept from the perspectives of philosophy, theology, and ethics. The book concludes with chapters on the hermeneutics of Life, and pays special attention to the Biosemiotics approach to the concept. The question 'What is Life?' has been deliberated by the greatest minds throughout human history. Life as we know it is not a substance or fundamental property, but a complex process. It is not an easy task to develop an unequivocal approach towards Life combining scientific, semiotic, philosophical, theological, and ethical perspectives. In its combination of these perspectives, and its wide-ranging scope, this book opens up levels and identifies issues which can serve as intersections for meaningful interdisciplinary discussions of Life in its different aspects. The book includes the four plenary lectures and selected, revised and extended papers from workshops of the 14th European Conference on Science and Theology (ECST XIV) held in Tartu, Estonia, April 2012

2 editions published in 2011 in German and held by 15 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Is religion natural? by Dirk Evers( )

1 edition published in 2012 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

How natural is religion? Is it a phenomenon written in our genes or brains, naturally developing with the development of the human race? The book considers the findings of evolutionary psychology from scientific, philosophical and theological perspectives and critically examines the relation between empirical, epistemological and theological notions. Chapters in the book deal with the aturalness of religion and religious experiences as based on genetics, biology and social psychology. Other authors examine the relationship between religion, science and theology with regard to the naturalness o

Embracing the ivory tower and stained glass windows : a Festschrift in honor of Archbishop Antje Jackelén by Jennifer Baldwin( )

1 edition published in 2016 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book brings together contributions from scholars from Europe and the United States to honor the theological work of Antje Jackel©♭n, the first female Archbishop of the Church of Sweden. In Archbishop Antje Jackel©♭nℓ́ℓs installation homily, she identifies the strength of the Church as a ℓ́ℓglobal network of prayer threads.ℓ́ℓ This book is an honorary and celebratory volume providing a ℓ́ℓglobal network of prayerful essaysℓ́ℓ by contributors from a variety of academic disciplines to creatively engage, reflect, and illuminate the theological work of Archbishop Jackel©♭n. Prior to her tenure in the Church of Sweden as Bishop of the Diocese of Lund and now the Archbishop of the Church of Sweden, Jackel©♭n served as professor of Systematic Theology, Director of the Zygon Center and President of European Society for the Study of Science and Religion (ESSSAT). While each essay intentionally embraces the theological and ministerial work of Jackel©♭n during her academic tenure, they also venture into areas as diverse as climate change, media studies, human uniqueness, hermeneutics, time, ethics, Christian theological tradition and history, traumatology, politics and society. As the first diverse explication of the theological thinking of Archbishop Jackel©♭n by her theological colleagues, this text provides scholars with an expansion of the scope of Archbishop Jackel©♭nℓ́ℓs theological thinking and initiates laity into the impact of Jackel©♭n thinking that combines with grace and precision the traditions of the Church, the challenges and gifts of the sciences, and the needs and longings of society and the world
