Lectures on the French revolution by John Emerich Edward Dalberg Acton Acton( Book )

Examines the movement of the Revolution from constitutional monarchy to popular tyranny, stressing the various errors, both theoretical and practical, which led to the Reign of Terror. Liberal in his point of view, deeply concerned with the problem of freedom, the author illustrates how a theoretical misconception -- the belief that the Revolution must concern itself with an attack on the executive -- led to the most tragic consequences. The king had already assented to the limitations of his powers; what ought to have been feared, however, was legislative irresponsibility. An additional unsolved problem, which had diastrous results, was the relationship of Church and State. It is the author's belief that had a Concordat been worked out, such as the one negotiated by Napoleon, the history of the Revolution might have been different
