C'est le début de la construction du Mur de Berlin, un mur destiné à empêcher les Allemands de l'Est de fuir vers l'Ouest. Harry Melchior, champion de natation à l'Est veut fuir l'oppression "communiste" mais refuse de laisser sa soeur Lotte. Il prend finalement la décision de partir et fait la promesse à Lotte qu'il reviendra la chercher. Avec son meilleur ami, Matthis, un ingénieur, Harry élabore un plan audacieux : creuser un tunnel sous le mur. Après avoir loué une usine désaffectée adjacente au mur côté Ouest, le groupe se met à creuser. Les 145 mètre de tunnel demanderont au moins 9 mois de travail acharné. Le danger de leur entreprise n'est pas seulement lié aux travaux eux-mêmes ou au risque d'être découverts, ils doivent aussi faire face aux informateurs de l'Est, contraints d'espionner pour l'Etat. L'entreprise du tunnel est une réussite. Non seulement Lotte a retrouvé Harry, mais 28 autres personnes ont aussi enfin rejoint leurs proches
