Robert Hitchman papers by Robert Hitchman ( )
in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
The Robert Hitchman papers refect his primary research focus on the history of the Pacific Northwest region. The bulk of the material in the collection is contained in the Research and background files series, which cover eclectic and wide-ranging topics, including early explorers (especially James Cook), local aviation, labor history, and maritime history. These files are largely comprised of clippings, ephemera, and periodicals dated between 1952-1980. The Historical manuscripts and collections series consists mainly of 19th century letters and documents, as well as Hitchman's autograph collection. Notable items include correspondence from Isaac Stevens and Selucius Garfielde. Also of interest is an undated, bound manuscript by poet, Thomas Wiedemann, which includes original drawings and caricatures of Seattle political figures. Additional collections of substance in this series include the papers of Roland G. Gamwell (a popular public speaker in Bellingham, Washington during the 1920s and 1930s) and a selection of letters and writings from James H. Christie (who was the head of the Seattle Press Expedition in the Olympics during 1889 and 1890). The Washington place names series contains notes and research materials Hitchman compiled and used while writing his book. Also included in this series is one large notebook of Edmond Meany's notes and primary source material for his own 1923 book on the subject, as well as some correspondence from and to Meany. The Personal papers series includes most of Hitchman's correspondence with authors, book dealers, publishers, librarians, and local historians, as well as ephemera relating to his other hobbies and recreational activities. This series will prove most valuable to those interested in Robert Hitchman and his place in the community. The Scrapbooks series is comprised not only scrapbooks created by Hitchman (mainly during the 1960s and 1970s), but ones he collected, most of which relate to the early exploration of the Olympic Mountains. Many of the scrapbooks were originally stored with the topical files to which they were connected, but these are now housed separately for preservation reasons
