A single electron has been isolated in a 6V deep Penning trap. Using synchronous detection its forced axial oscillation at 55.7 MHz has been observed continuously. Excitation was either sideband at 54.7 MHz or parametric at 111.4 MHz, the latter making collision-induced phase jumps visible. The e-trap system studied resembles a stationary hydrogen atom in a large magnetic field

During the third (and final) year of the "Indium Mono-Ion Oscillator" grant, our goal of loading and observing a single indium ion was realized. In order to achieve this result, we relied on the development work of previous years; the "background suppression system" developed earlier was found to be particularly useful. We also began the design and construction of the all-solid-state "clock laser" system. Our intent is to replace all of the bulky argon and dye lasers with solid state systems; this will allow considerable reduction in the size and power consumption of the resulting optical frequency standard. jg p.2

Work has been done on the study of magnetic resonance and hfs of e( - ), He(+), 3He(+), and H2(+). Techniques for measuring the temperature of ion gases and their radiative cooling have been developed. Extension of the techniques developed under the grants resulted in the highest resolution for any atomic line (199Hg(+) hfs) ever achieved

Techniques for measuring the temperature of ion gases and their radiative cooling have been developed. Continuous observation of a single electron oscillating with an energy of approximately equal or> (1/100) eV inside a penning trap has been realized, 'Monoelectron Oscillator'. A new principle of forced radial shrinking of stored ion clouds by simultaneously cyclotron excitation and axial damping has been proposed which may be of use in the confinement of fusion plasmas
