Émile Friant (1863-1932) est un inclassable génie. Cet élève de Cabanel, avec lequel il s'entendra assez mal, en aura acquis la virtuosité et le métier étourdissant. Mais il saura s'éloigner très vite de ce maître trop dogmatique pour révéler toute sa sensibilité, très proche souvent des impressionnistes auxquels on ne peut cependant pas le rattacher. Serait-il alors un peintre naturaliste, comme pourraient le faire penser ses choix de scènes de la vie quotidienne ? Ou un réaliste, aux portraits quasi photographiques ? Finalement, il s'avère impossible de le réduire à une école, à un courant. Il se révèle un peintre profondément original, capable d'allier la plus grande précision dans le rendu sans se départir d'une poésie et d'une verve narrative qui aujourd'hui encore font notre admiration. On redécouvre toutes les facettes de son talent si multiple et profond dans cet ouvrage qui accompagne la grande exposition rétrospective que lui consacre le musée des Beaux-Arts de Nancy
