The kindly ones : a novel by Jonathan Littell( Book )

141 editions published between 2006 and 2017 in 16 languages and held by 2,708 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Fictional memoir of Dr. Max Aue, a former Nazi officer who survived the war and has reinvented himself, many years later, as a middle-class entrepreneur and family man in northern France. Max is an intellectual steeped in philosophy, literature, and classical music. He is also a cold-blooded assassin and the consummate bureaucrat. Through the eyes of this cultivated yet monstrous man, we experience the horrors of the Second World War and the Nazi genocide of the Jews in graphic, disturbingly precise detail from the dark and disturbing point of view of the executioner rather than the victim. During the period from June 1941 through April 1945, Max is posted to Poland, the Ukraine, and the Caucasus; he is present at the Battle of Stalingrad, at Auschwitz and Cracow; he visits occupied Paris and lives through the chaos of the final days of the Nazi regime in Berlin. Although Max is a totally imagined character, his world is peopled by real historical figures, such as Eichmann, Himmler, Goring, Speer, Heydrich, Hoss, and Hitler himself
Une vieille histoire by Jonathan Littell( Book )

"Under the title, these words: "new version". What do they mean? "New" refers, obviously, to another, "original" version. But what difference do we want to make? Does the "new" book erase the "first", which would only be a part of it, or a failed, incomplete attempt? If the writing of a book is an experiment, the publication puts an end to it, definitive. But for once--the publication, in 2011, of a story in two chapters under the title An old story--this was not the case. Why I do not know; but one day I found that the text, like a ghost, mysteriously continued to produce. It was therefore necessary to start writing again, as if there was no book. Curious experience. Rather than a continuity, a change of plan. Remains the device: at each chapter, seven now, a narrator comes out of a pool, changes, and starts running in a gray corridor. He discovers doors, which open on territories (the house, the hotel room, the studio, a wider space, a city or a wild zone), places where are played and replay, to infinity, the most essential human relationships (family, couple, loneliness, group, war). These territories traveled, these reports exhausted, the race ends: in the pool, it goes without saying. Then, all over again. Same, but not quite. But seven, it's not just two plus five. The web, which weaves between them the chain of territories and human relations, becomes denser and branched out. The most fundamental data (the genre, the very age of the narrator/s) become unstable, they proliferate, mutate, then repeat themselves in a form each time renewed, altered, The race, barren at first, becomes research, but of what? A breakthrough, perhaps, probably impossible, or as fleeting as possible, but all the more necessary."--Translation by Gallimard

"In this powerful fictional memoir, a former Nazi official, now reinvented as a middle-class family man in northern France, tells the story of his life and times, promising that the story he has to tell is one that will implicate the reader as well as the teller. Maximilien Aue graduates with a law degree just after the Nazis come to power and begins a new life in the security branch of the SS. Through him we experience the horrors of the Second World War and the Holocaust in vivid detail from the dark and disturbing point of view of the executioner rather than the victim ..."--Container

9 editions published between 2007 and 2008 in French and held by 106 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Francis Bacon was one of the iconic figures of modern art, a painter who transformed the way we see and experience the human body. Mirroring Bacon's famous triptychs, Jonathan Littell's three essays engage with the artist's contorted figures and portraits, his screaming popes and apes, his flanks of beef and his umbrellas. In 'A Day at the Prado', Littell analyses Bacon's painting in light of Velazquez and Goya - two artists who deeply influenced him. In 'The Grammar of Francis Bacon', the artist's portraits of his lover George Dyer before and after his suicide in 1971 provide a key to the hidden correspondences between the figures he painted. Littell then, in 'The True Image', looks at the history of icon painting and photography before returning to Bacon, questioning the very meaning of truth in art. Erudite and deeply personal, Jonathan Littell's exegesis on the work of a major twentieth-century artist seeks to lay bare the sinews of Francis Bacon's tormented art. Jonathan Littell usually writes in French."--Publisher description
