With 47 million Americans living in poverty today, U.S. Senator Rob Portman is poised with a plan to improve their lives. Portman has introduced "Constructive Conservatism: A Bottom-Up Approach to Tackling Poverty." Senator Portman's plan calls for more targeted, results-oriented measures to combat poverty in Ohio and across the country. Not just words of encouragement, Portman's plan is a commitment from the Federal level to support local businesses and communities. His vision includes reforms in the tax code, trade policies, regulatory framework, healthcare system, energy policy and the education system. Portman's plan has three major interconnected components. The first addresses the drug epidemic by supporting prevention and treatment. Second, assist individuals in re-entering the community following prison by working with local organizations, such as Alvis House in Columbus, to provide job training, mentoring and overall support. Third, offer work retraining to match employers' needs with employee skills. Portman is supporting legislation such as the re-authorization of The Second Chance Act, and updating the Workforce Investment Act
