Blank spots on the map : the dark geography of the Pentagon's secret world by Trevor Paglen( Book )

18 editions published between 2009 and 2014 in English and Spanish and held by 989 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The adventurous, insightful, and often chilling story of a young geographer's road trip through the underworld of U.S. military and CIA "black ops" sites. Geographer-artist Trevor Paglen's research into areas that officially "don't exist" leads him on a globe-trotting adventure into a vast, undemocratic, and uncontrolled black empire--the unmarked spots on a map where our military conducts its most clandestine operations. Run by an amorphous group of government agencies and private companies, this empire's annual budget is over $40 billion, yet almost no one knows how it works or what it does. Whether it's from a hotel room in Vegas, secret prisons in Kabul, buried CIA aircraft in Central American jungles, Washington suburbs, or a trailer in Shoshone Indian territory, Paglen's reporting is impassioned, rigorous, relentless, and eye-opening. This is an exposé of a world that, officially, isn't even there.--From publisher description

Torture taxi : on the trail of the CIA's rendition flights by Trevor Paglen( Book )

8 editions published between 2006 and 2007 in English and held by 333 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this first book to systematically investigate extraordinary rendition, an award-winning investigative journalist and a "military geographer" explore the CIA program in a series of journeys that takes them around the world. They travel to suburban Massachusetts to profile a CIA front company that supplies the agency with airplanes; to Smithfield, North Carolina, to meet pilots who fly CIA aircraft; to the San Francisco suburbs to study with a "planespotter" who tracks the CIA's movements; and to Afghanistan, where the authors visit the notorious "Salt Pit" prison and meet released Afghan detainees
Experimental geography by Nato Thompson( Book )

7 editions published between 2008 and 2009 in English and held by 219 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The manifestations of 'experimental geography' (a term coined by geographer Trevor Paglen in 2002) run the gamut of contemporary art practice today: sewn cloth cities that spill out of suitcases, bus tours through water treatment centers, performers climbing up the sides of buildings, and sound works capturing the buzz of electric waves on the power grid. In the hands of contemporary artists, the study of humanity's engagement with the earth's surface becomes a riddle best solved in experimental fashion. The exhibition presents a panoptic view of this new practice, through a wide range of mediums including sound and video installations, photography, sculpture, and experimental cartography. The approaches used by the artists featured in Experimental Geography range from the poetic to the empirical. The more pragmatic techniques include those used by the Center for Urban Pedagogy (CUP) in projects made with students and other non-art groups that aim to strengthen peoples' roles as agents of change in their own environments. See, for example, their map intended to help longshoremen and truckers identify chokepoints in the cargo trade network. In their similarly empirical projects, the Center for Land Use Interpretation (CLUI), a research organization, examines the nature and extent of human interaction with the earth's surface. CLUI embraces a multidisciplinary approach that forces a reading of the American landscape (such as the disfiguring effects of culling natural resources from the picturesque banks of the Hudson River), thereby refamiliarizing viewers with the overlooked details of their everyday experience."--Publisher's description

A photo of a secret CIA prison. A map designed to help visitors reach Malibu's notoriously inaccessible public beaches. Guidebooks to factories, prisons, and power plants in upstate New York. An artificial reef fabricated from 500 tons of industrial waste. These are some of the more than one hundred projects represented in Experimental Geography, a groundbreaking collection of visual research and mapmaking from the past ten years. Experimental Geography explores the distinctions between geographical study and artistic experience of the earth, as well as the juncture where the two realms collide (and possibly make a new field altogether). This lavishly illustrated book features more than a dozen maps; artwork by Francis Alys, Alex Villar, and Yin Xiuzhen; and recent projects by The Center for Land Use Interpretation, the Raqs Media Collective, and the Center for Urban Pedagogy. The collection is framed by essays by bestselling author Trevor Paglen, Jeffrey Kastner, and editor Nato Thompson

In this dissertation I examine the geography of American state secrecy, a landscape of secret military bases, secure intelligence facilities, classified projects, hidden budgets, and people who "don't exist," a landscape that Pentagon and intelligence insiders call the "black world." Through a series of contemporary and historical case studies, I show how the United States produced, reproduced, and expanded a secret state within the state, and along the way developed the power to "disappear" budgets, places, and even people

In the book, two newly commissioned essays provide critical reading of the Autonomy Cube project - the art historian Dr. Luke Skrebowski positions the piece in the history of institutional critic, meanwhile architect and urbanist Keller Easterling tackles with its political potential
