Dort erweckt ein Blutstropfen Andrejs den Leichnam der von der russischen Inquisition hingerichteten Hexe Asa zu neuem Leben, die in ihrer Nachfahrin, der Schloßherrentochter Katja, eine bezaubernde Doppelgängerin hat. Gleich zu Beginn schockiert der Film mit einer der grausamsten Szenenfolgen in der Geschichte des phantastischen Kinos: In einer Rückblende wird Asas Hinrichtung gezeigt. Der Zuschauer sieht, mit den Augen der Hexe (Regisseur Mario Bava verwandte die subjektive Kamera), einen Henkersknecht auf sich zukommen, der Asa mit einem mächtigen Holzhammer eine Maske ins Gesicht treibt, die innen mit zentimeterlangen eisernen Stacheln ausgestattet ist.
